Big Hearts Under the Big Sky
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How the program works, who qualifies, and how MOGA outfitters make it all possible.

Why did MOGA start the Big Hearts Under the Big Sky program?
Outfitters and guides are some of the most generous, kind, and supportive people in the country. In Montana, outfitters understand the importance of sharing their beautiful parts of the world with others. Through Big Hearts, Montana outfitters and guides recognize the responsibility of giving back to deserving individuals, and introducing them to the healing powers of nature.
These trips look expensive. How are the costs and expenses managed?
A fully outfitted and guided trip can cost thousands of dollars, which is generally more than a single family-operated business can routinely provide. To ensure a steady supply of high-quality trips, Big Hearts raises funds to help offset the outfitter's expenses. With every trip, participating outfitters donate to the effort, with MOGA assisting with some of the costs. Many parties share the load (MOGA, Big Hearts, and the outfitter), which allows us to continue offering trips to qualified and well-deserving participants.
What makes Big Hearts a "National Model"?
Big Hearts has a streamlined approach to matching deserving applicants with professional outfitter members who are licensed, insured, and have the necessary infrastructure, experience, and ability to provide a high-quality, fully outfitted trip. Every trip is tailored to the family, including military veterans, first responders, or children with life-threatening illnesses.
Is it new for MOGA members to be involved in charitable giving?
Not at all. The outfitting industry is one of the most charitable and giving in existence. Many MOGA members were donating trips for years before Big Hearts was founded in 2007. Montana outfitters and guides regularly give to charitable causes, nonprofit groups, and worthy individuals.
What is the value of working with licensed Montana guides and outfitters?
MOGA members excel at providing safe and enjoyable outdoor opportunities. Every participating outfitter is licensed and insured, and able to adapt to the specific needs of each Big Hearts trip.
Can every deserving person get a license to be served by this program?
Unfortunately, no. Montana code is very narrowly written, and many deserving people cannot be served because they do not qualify for a license. Current Montana law requires that a child be 17 or younger and terminal to qualify. This law needs to be reviewed and softened. There are many cases where deserving families fall outside its narrow bounds.
How do I nominate someone?
Visit our Get Involved page and submit either the Youth Nomination Form or the Military/First Responder Nomination Form. Nominations are reviewed individually and additional information may be requested. Successful nominees are contacted directly to begin trip planning.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Big Hearts Under the Big Sky operates under the Montana Outfitters & Guides Education Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Your donation is tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.
